September 21, 1998 - September 25, 1998 Screening - Dogs and Adopters Day Five
Subject: CLASS: evaluating dogs
Linda A Forrest - sosbeagles@JUNO.COM said: That I'm not sure about what's ok and what's not. I would hazard a guess that it would best to get Ms Sue Sternburg's permission and thoughts first. I can tell you that I'm not quite sure how to contact her. :-) Does anyone else on the list know of Ms Sternburg's facility/location? I believe it's in the New England area (I'm in So CA). Then there's the other thing - the evaluation sheet is several pages long. Call me lazy (actually I've just been *really* busy lately) but I'm not sure I have the time to transcribe it to this list. Sorry ... Maybe down the line.

From: "Monica B." - Rednoyz@KINCYB.COM The web site for the seminar is "http://www.puppyworks.com/ and has profiles of the people who speak. I think permission would be involved in passing out the worksheet. I don't think it would be that easy for someone to use the worksheet without proper instruction. I thought it was very important for me to see how the dogs reacted during the "testing". There was also much discussion about what we were seeing. We saw many different dogs take the "test" (from the Pasadens Humane Society) and it gave a very good overview that just reading the test would not supply.

Rondout Kennel Several of our GRROWLS' volunteers have taken the seminar you mention -- evaluating shelter dogs -- and it has been very, very helpful.

Subject: CLASS: Screening Today is the last day to discuss Screening - Dogs and Adoptors. If you have anymore questions on this topic, now is the time. :-} Hopefully we have covered most of the questions you have at this time. The whole point in screening is to try and make the best match possible. It's not good enough to just put any dog in any home, our job is to get our dogs in the best homes possible and to find the best dogs for our adoptors. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"....and in Rescue we truly see that. Neither dog nor adoptor has to be "perfect", just right for each other. Let me know if you have any more Screening questions...

Subject: CLASS: Working with Shelters Classmembers... Next week we will be talking about "working with shelters" Since for most of us, the majority of our dogs come from animal shelters, it is very important to have a good relationship with them. Start thinking about your questions now and we will start on this Monday morning!!
